You scream, I scream, SqueezeOC races for ice cream!

July 18th, 2007, 10:40 am by Kelli Skye Fadroski

We Love Ice Cream! We’re a group of ice cream hungry journalists with one mission on our minds: to win a fully stocked Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream freezer with various delish ice cream products for the rest of the year!

Five brave SqueezeOC staffers will be embarking on a journey to downtown Fullerton this Friday from noon-1:30 p.m. for the Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream’s Rocky Road Lunch Break Challenge. We’re not quite sure what to expect but were told that it involved teamwork, fun, and a scavenger hunt on the streets of downtown Fullerton.

All we needed to be told was that there was FREE ice cream involved and SqueezeOC was all in. This event coincides with the celebration of national ice cream month and is also an event created to bring about a sense of community and teamwork amongst co-workers and local businesses. Participants will have to complete wacky stunts and a mad-dash search for clues and a race to find the scavenger objects.

Two runners-up will receive an ice cream party from Dreyer’s and all participants will receive a $20 Dreyer’s gift certificate.

Come on down to Villa Del Sol (305 N. Harbor Blvd.) in Fullerton to help cheer us on and enjoy some free ice cream treats from Dreyer’s!

Chocolate Tree

This really belongs on Willy Wonka’s showroom floor. The Marriott in Anaheim is hosting the Celebrity Food Show, where you’ll be able to find this chocolate tree, made by Chef Rick Royal and a 60-strong team of students and alumni from theArt Institute of California. The trunk, branches and 10,000 leaves are all made from chocolate while the 300 oranges are made from marzipan. It’s on display until Sunday if you want to go check it out.

Watermelon selection 101

June 21st, 2007, 3:04 pm by Brian

Nothing says summer like the big sweet juicy red meat of a watermelon.

For summer solstice I wanted to treat the SqueezeOC staff to the juiciest watermelon I could find. Only problem was I knew nothing about choosing one.

Nobody on staff knew how to choose a watermelon either, so we searched the Internet for some advice. Some sites said the watermelon should sound hollow when you slap it. Other sites said it should sound full. The National Watermelon Promotion Board says a sweet watermelon should be symmetrical, firm and “heavy for its size.” The NWPB doesn’t even suggest slapping the melon.

What I did over my summer vacation

June 19th, 2007, 11:53 am by Degen

Well it’s not as if we get 3 months off here in the adult world, but still, two weeks felt really fine. Yes, I finally grabbed some vacation time these past couple weeks, and it was well-spent. Everyone keeps asking me, “Where’d you go?” but for this vacation, I decided to just stay around O.C. and do the things I love: run, bike, read, and cook. There was very much of the latter. Here are some of the tasty things I prepared.

Bacon #4: Burger’s Jowl Bacon

June 14th, 2007, 2:23 pm by jchin

Uncooked Burger's Jowl BaconI haven’t blogged about bacon for the past two months, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been eating it!

Bacon #4 is Burger’s Jowl Bacon from Missouri. Bacon can be made from various cuts of the pig: belly, middle of the back, shoulder and cheek. Jowl bacon comes from the cheek and is very fatty – a big change from Bacon #3, which was relatively lean (and heavily, overly flavored with cinnamon.)

McCormick & Schmick’s knows its salmon

May 23rd, 2007, 4:01 pm by jessica

It’s not very often that a person gets the chance to hear and talk about salmon for over two hours straight. So when opportunity knocked, I just had to let the fish in.

McCormick & Schmick’s in Irvine invited SqueezeOC to a “salmon tour” last night. Judging from the rather elaborate press kit — including ear plugs, a concert-type ticket and VIP wristband — we weren’t really sure what to expect. The event turned out to be a very nice dinner where we got to eat lots of good salmon over three courses, accompanied by a few different wines. We also learned everything we’d need to know about salmon if any of us were ever to make it on Jeopardy.
