The Sounds come to Orange County

September 11th, 2007, 1:19 pm by KELLI SKYE FADROSKI, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

thesoundsblog.jpgSwedish pop-rock group, The Sounds is doing a mini-California tour and is confirmed to play the Galaxy Theatre (3503 S. Harbor Blvd., Santa Ana. 714-957-0600) at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

The bands’ breakthrough album was “Living in America” a snarky, anthemous record with a ton of energy. The band went out on the U.S. Vans Warped Tour in 2004 and gained a huge North American fan base. It took three years before another Sounds album was released. In 2006, the band put out “Dying to Say This to You,” which carried the same amount of bratty enthusiasm as the first record.

Under the Influence of Giants and Liam and Me will open the show. Tickets are $29 and available at the Galaxy Theatre box office and on the web at galaxytheatre.com.

All-Star Hip-Hop comes to Orange County

July 27th, 2007, 1:32 pm by KELLI SKYE FADROSKI, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Let’s be honest, there just aren’t that many hip-hop shows in Orange County. Every once in a while we’ll be blessed with a visit by someone like The Game or Bone Thugs, but it just doesn’t happen often. Hip-hop label, Throwback Records is bringing some of the best DJs and MCs in the business to Club Vegas in Costa Mesa.

The all-star line up includes hip-hop duo Verbal Threat, along with Dilated People’s DJ Babu and The Beat Junkies’ DJ Rhettmatic.

The show is at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 2 at Club Vegas (1901 Newport Blvd., Costa Mesa. 949-548-9500). Tickets are $20 general admission; $40 VIP (which includes no-line wait, and VIP seating and service). Tickets can be purchased at the venue pre-show.

Ralphie May’s Funny Ladies

July 26th, 2007, 5:12 pm by KELLI SKYE FADROSKI, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Kelli Skye & Ralphie MayLast night at the Irvine Improv funny man Ralphie May hosted an all-female comedy night featuring some of Southern California’s funniest females. The show was taped for a DVD that the “Funny Ladies” troupe plans on releasing with some behind the scenes footage late this year.

In his intro for the evening, May said that the reason he wanted to put together the show was to show that the stereotype that only male comics are funny was ridiculous and that these female comedians were “really fuckin’ funny.”

Last night’s line up included May’s better half Lahna Turner (who is also seven-months pregnant with the couple’s first child), Lisa Alvarado, Gayla Johnson, Bernadette Balagtas, Jennifer Murphy and Alysia Wood.

If I had to pick a favorite for the night, it would be a toss up between Turner and Johnson. Turner’s music/comedy act and “Mayonnaise” song had me absolutely rolling and Johnson’s bit using those fake “Billy Bob” teeth almost made me pee myself. Bernadette Balagtas impersonation of her Pilipino mother and how she could get a family of eight Philipino’s into a theme park on one annual pass, was another highlight of the night.

This group of ladies are all very different - some are married, some are single (very single, and they let you know it), and they vary in age and ethnicity.

Definitely check these ladies out, they perform locally quite a bit, either at the Improvs or some of the local venues that have regular comedy nights (like Martini Blues in Huntington Beach or Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa).

Maxx Femme and Castaneda @ Detroit Bar

July 13th, 2007, 10:44 am by KELLI SKYE FADROSKI, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Last night fellow Squeezer Courtney and I headed out to Detroit Bar to see Maxx Femme and Castaneda. Detroit Bar has quickly become one of our favorite spots - we have to admit lately we’ve been going there quite a bit to check out club nights, comedy showcases, Monday night resident band or just to hear some new music.

The funny thing about Detroit is that it really doesn’t come to life until after 10 p.m. A few people wander in a little early to grab a cocktail or a beer and stake their claim at a table or at the bar. We have our usual drinks - Appletini and a Long Island, but tonight we went with a screwdriver and a vodka tonic.

We hung out and chatted while listening to Paul Layton perform his solo set. His voice is super soothing and it set a great vibe for the rest of the night. Maxxfemm is a brother-sister duo, Lara and Paul Layton, out of Orange County (currently living in Los Angeles but they were born and raised in the Newport Beach area).
