I picked up these “fly” lollipops as a funny treat for my husband’s 36th birthday. I just couldn’t pass them up.
You wear Grillz on your teeth and suck on the attached lollipop, which comes in two flavas: Gold (peach) and Silver (strawberry).
They’re made by Candy Planet, and I found them at our local Blockbuster Video store. Check out the candy maker’s Web site for more info.

The Newport Beach Breakers end their season this Wednesday, July 25 at the Newport Beach Country Club. Tickets are sold out but hunting for one or two on craigslist or ebay might be a successful alternative and well worth the effort, considering the lineup. Maria Sharapova, the world’s No. 2 female tennis player, will head the Breakers against John McEnroe and the New York Sportimes.
Just in case you’re not familiar with the World TeamTennis (WTT) game format, it goes a little something like this: Each match will consist of five sets, with one set each of men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The first team to reach five games wins each set. Each team consists of two men, two women and a coach.
The Breakers are co-owned by WTT founder Billie Jean King. Profits from the game go to Hoag Hospital. Hope to see you there!

It’s St. Patrick’s Day again and that means it’s time for our annual pub crawl. Last year we hit lots of sure-thing pubs like O’Hara’s and Silky Sullivan’s. So this morning, we decided to try places we didn’t go last year. First up – Roderick’s in Tustin. Two posters outside the restaurant clearly said the place opens at 10 a.m., but when we got there at 10:30 a.m., the doors were still locked. Bummer.

I just saw Alec Baldwin walk onto the concourse. Paris Hilton and her sister Nikki were just spotted leaving the cocktail area — probably looking for me to apologize about last night’s shoving incident. Everyone is soaking wet right now…it is pouring rain.

My credential ranking for this game is 5 (4 6) — which means I don’t have a seat, although I’m allowed access to anywhere in the stadium including the field. I’ve camped out on the lower level of the stadium, on the Colt’s 30-yard line, Bear’s side. It’s great seats at what has been a pretty exciting game so far. I am wearing a plastic pouncho I bought for five bucks and I am so cold, it’s hard for me to type right now because my arms and fingers are so sore, but I’m set on my mission.

My Friday night is still empty, but I found something to do on Saturday night. Thanks to a friend at the BankUnited Center, I just scored two tickets to the Super Bowl Gridiron Celebrity Hoops Basketball Tournament featuring NFL players like Terrell Owens, Ray Lewis, Steve McNair and Shawn Merriman.
Looks fun, but the game only lasts until 9, so I have to find something else to do for the evening. Here’s my list of parties to crash Saturday night:

It’s a shame that it takes a bad event for everyone to come together.
Tower Records is in its final weeks of existence (there’s still no official last day yet) and the company’s Southern California employees were all invited to Slidebar Café in Fullerton to reminisce and meet up with old friends.

What a stellar weekend of five-star events this was in Orange County: from the stunning “Swan Lake” by the Kirov Ballet at OCPAC to raw-sexy Camp Freddy at the Samueli Theater next door, from Detroit Bar’s classy-friendly 5th anniversary party to Etnies’ raw and raunchy 20th anniversary shebang (in LAKE FOREST of all places!).
We’re so lucky to have such a dynamic, vibrant arts and entertainment community here. And I thank God for home-grown visionaries like Dan Bradley who’ve helped create this energy that now rivals that of traditional big cities.

Last night could have been a bust. A big SqueezeOC crew headed over to Steamers in Fullerton for a burlesque and jazz show and left feeling robbed of our $7 covers. While the band, Miles Mosely’s brothel jazz had our feet tapping (more on the band in a later post), the burlesque show by Courtney Cruz and Shelby Jones (the real reason we made the trip) was a big let down. Bored and unimpressed after the very short first set, we took off for The Block in Orange where our night was saved by that B.M.F. Sam Jackson.

Yikes, it’s been a week since I went to this party, shoulda posted this earlier. Last Saturday (Aug. 5), I went to a party at RVCA clothing’s headquarters in Costa Mesa. The main deal here was the art show, “Dos Mutatos,” by Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh and KRK Ryden. The event was a full-on party: free food, open bar, skating opportunities at RVCA’s ramp, plus live music from a Devo cover band called Deva. That’s Mark Mothersbaugh on the right with the coke bottle glasses. The guy with the blue turban is in Devo too.

Check it out, found these bracelets made of Barbie doll heads and toy cars at The Black Flamingo in Laguna Beach. Black Flamingo sells lots of one-of-a-kind new and vintage dresses and accessories. Their stuff has been in Laguna Beach: The Real OC.”

Also, found this at Inkwells Paperie, a great card and stationery shop in Corona del Mar. A 14-year-old boy from Newport Beach made a bunch of pencil cases using old ties. What do you think: cute or dorky?
